If after trying the 35-70 for a few weeks, you preferred the picture quality to the 18-105 and felt it on par with the prime 50mm f/1.4D, then that 35-70 is apparently the lens for you. If you can't buy that particular copy then what you are faced with is a search where some of the 35-70s will please you and some will not.

My feeling is that all lenses are somewhat variable and that "high speed" zooms can be especially problematic.
One thing we may agree on is a preference for the older push-pull zoom designs.

Over the years I have had several 80-200 and 70-200, 2.8 Nikkors. All were good to excellent lenses but for the past 5 years I have enjoyed the feel and IQ of a 20 year-old push-pull AF-D. Go figure!
