Is the D800 a suitable camera for a tourist?

I am soon to do a tour of Italy and I would like to upgrade my old Pentax K10 to a Nikon D800. As a tourist, most of my photographay would be hand held. I am sure that I can achieve high shutter speeds and would love a D800. However if I am likely to have difficulty obtaining "sharp" results I will rethink my purchase option.
I was planning on buying the new 24-85G lens and a 50mm 1.8.
