As others have mentioned, yes you probably can scour the internet for almost anything in this book, 'discern it', and compile it for your review.

But really, how much do you charge for your time? The book is $30, a bargain compared to all that time googling, discerning, and cutting and pasting.

Thom's book is excellent. He is extremely knowledgeable, and a pretty good writer who covers some pretty technical things in an accessible fashion. He also offers explanations for why you would use each of the 2000 different options on the camera. Sure, you probably know 1500 of them, but you will always come across some option or setting you have never used before and say 'Ah, so thats what thats for' or 'Doh, I should have used X in that situations last month, not Y'.

Unless you have spent, literally, a couple of hundred hours drilling down into each level of the camera, each menu item, etc etc etc, then you know less then Thom. Of course you could do just that, sit down for 2 weeks and spend all your time systematically testing.

Or you could just spend the $30.

And again, how much do you charge for your time?
