Fundamental Misconception
Jul 10, 2012

What's ridiculous is how some people tout the EX2 as having the better lens, compared to the Sony RX100.

Would you say that the Canon S100, with its f/2 28mm lens, has a "brighter" or "better" lens than a FF camera with a f/2.8 lens? After, f/2 is a WHOLE stop faster than f/2.8, right?

The diameter of the EX2 lens is much less than the diameter of the RX100's lens.

Aperture diameter = actual focal length divided by f-number.

EX2: aperture diameter = 5.2 mm / 1.4 = 3.7 mm.

RX100: aperture diameter = 10.4 mm / 1.8 = 5.7 mm.

The RX100 has the bigger aperture diameter. Its lens funnels more light to the sensor.

Just think about it this way - which hose allows the greater amount of water to pass?

A hose with a smaller diameter or a hose with a bigger diameter/

Clearly, the RX100 has the superior lens, even though it is f/1.8 and not f/1.4.
