There seems to be conflicting information on the utility of the above combination.

In terms of the above combination, could you please advise me on

(1) Focus speed

It's a little slower and this is really only evident in lower light. However, I haben't found it to be an issue.

(2) Sharpness compared to a lesser converter such as the 1.7 with this lens

From my experience, the 2x TCIII is at least as good as the 1.7x TCII, so much so that I do not bother taking the 1.7x TCII with me if I am using the 70-200 f2.8 VRII as my longest lens. The 70-200 + (any) TC combo works best up to about 30mts, after that, the IQ drops off a little.

(3) Comparison in sharpness to the Nikon 80-400?

From what I have seen the 70-200 will blow it into the weeds, and even with the even with the 2x TXIII, it will be just as good if not better.

If you look at Photozone's test results from these two lenses you will see that the 70-200 is much better right across the range.

However, there is also a test of the 70-200 VRI (not the VRII) with the old 2x TCII (not the new 2x TCIII) and even with the old VRI and the old 2x TCII the combo at least matches the 80-400. The new 70-200 VRII is a smidgen better than the old version, but most importantly, the new 2x TCIII is by far better than the old 2x TCII tested on the old 70-200 f2.8 VRI at Photozone, so you can see that the 70-200 f2.8 VRII + 2x TCIII combo will be better than your 80-400.

This is the Phtotzone test of the 70-200 f2.8 VRI and it also has results with the 2x TCII combo for comparison to the 80-400.

Even though I have the 300 f2.8 VRII and 500 f4, I take the 70-200 f2.8 VRII and use the 1.4x and 2x TC's when on holidays. I do not hesitate to use the 2x TCIII as the results are that good.
