I think 24-85/3.5-4.5 vr is great companion to 24-70 f/2.8

When you are OK to carry the 24-70 use it - when you need lightweight use 24-85 vr. Especially great for the times when you carry the big wide zoom (16-35/14-24) with the big tele zoom (70-200 2.8) and don't want to carry the 3rd heavy zoom (24-70 or 24-120 f/4 vr). Probably use up the difference to carry a specialist prime like the 105 vr micro.
Other possibility carry 20 f/2.8, 24-85 vr, 70-300 vr and optionally carry 28 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8g for speed (probably drop 28 f/1.8g if not needing speed on the wide end).
