SX40HS @ 35mm equiv.confusion.

The Canon SX40 is alleged to have a focal range of 24mm-to-840mm. Is that in 35mm terms? Or is there some cropping factor that needs to be applied?

I have a 17-50 lens for my Canon Rebel DSLR(1.6X crop sensor). So the 17mm becomes 27.2 in 35mm terms. This seems to indicate that the SX40's zoom is a bit wider than the 17-50 lens's. Is this so? Or is there a crop factor for the SX40 as well(as for my DSLR)? Thanks for clearing this up.
