In my opinion a ball-head is best for stationary subjects, landscapes, etc. where you have time to tweak the adjustment/s; & a Gimbal Head for moving subjects.

Ball-heads don't typically have a way to balance your gear, & if they're the slightest bit loose the the cam/lens will flop down, so with moving subjects, you have constantly hold the rig firmly, or repeatedly tighten & loosen the tension.

I have a Manfrotto 468MGRC2 which is a very good Ball-head, but since purchasing a Manfrotto 3421 Gimbal Head, the Ball-head has been "gathering dust"

I would suggest the Bogen/Manfrotto 3421: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AE66A/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0019HZZQW&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0HKMHXSTS0XTE2W8JKEY

Optica GH-1:

Or, if you have "deep pockets:, a Wimberly.
