D7000 & Off Camera flash giving me problems. Please help.

I am using a D7000 with a SB600. Off Camera. Holding the flash on a tripod. This is for outdoors. I have the camera set to -- for the flash output. I have the SB600 on wireless. It only seems to work correctly if I have the flash almost directly in front of the camera. And I have to be close. Should I set the output on the onboard flash to something more powerful? or should I just break out my triggers and go manual?

What I want to do is have the flash about 10ft in front of the camera and about 3-4 ft to the right or left side also.
