ultimate E-M5 settings for m4/3, 4/3 and legacy lenses (still + video)
Jul 6, 2012

OVERALL:
SF/CF/MF = 2/2/2; AFstill = SF + MF; AFvideo = SF + MF
MF assist: on
Fn1 = magnify (for legacy lenses)
Fn2 = AEL/AFL (to lock AE)
Rec button = MF toggle (to lock AF)
right dial button = single/multiple shot toggle
below dial button = ISO adjustement
daylight: A-mode
low light: S-mode
Auto-ISO = 1600

When you want to shoot more shots with the same focus or AE: press the MF (Rec) or AEL/AFL (Fn2) button respectively
Film-mode set to S

M4/3 LENSES (in A- or S-mode):

Point camera on subject and adjust AE with red/blue blinkies (with AE compensation dial).

Halfpress on subject: AF + AE is locked and you can shoot (on AE lock the herefore set AE compensation is still active).

4/3 LENSES (in A- or S-mode):
Point camera on subject and adjust AE with red/blue blinkies.

Halfpress on subject and stop AF when subject is visible,.....now press the MF button (Rec-button) and adjust focus through turning the focus ring on the lens (magnified view with MF assist). Now you can shoot.

LEGACY LENSES (in A- or S-mode):
Point camera on subject and adjust AE with red/blue blinkies.

Press the magnify button (Fn1-button) two times to adjust focus with the focus ring on the lens (afterwards press the magnify button long to return to normal view).
Now you can shoot.

VIDEO (start in S-mode and afterwards continue in Film-mode):
Start in S-mode with 1/60 sec (in bright day-light use ND 3X filter).

Point camera on subject and adjust AE with red/blue blinkies and follow the above mentioned procedure when using a m4/3, 4/3 or legacy lens (MF-assist and magnify-button don't work in Film-mode).

Now move mode dial to the Film-mode and start filming by pressing the shutter button fully (focus and AE-compensation are taken from the S-mode).

Meanwhile filming you can adjust focus by halfpressing the shutter button or turning the focusring on the lens. You can also lock AE during filming (and so NOT using the ISO-Auto feature, by pressing the AEL/AFL button (Fn2).

OTHER REMARKS:

I shoot RAW and set Noise Filter to off, contrast to -1, Sharpness to -1 and saturation to 0 for video (while video is not going higher than ISO 1600).

On the grip I gave one button the 2X digital teleconverter function for video (doesn't work for RAW).

Best, Erik
