D800 left focus issue

This may sound like a completely dumb question, but I've been reading a lot of posts about the D800/D4 left focus point issue and am wondering if we're making too big a deal about it.

I'm an enthusiast/advanced amateur/total clod who MIGHT be interested in a D800 for landscape, macro, and a family photos.

I have a D700 and taken about 10,000 pictures--I can't remember ever composing a frame where I used the left-most focus point as primary. Before anyone comments, no I don't always put the subject dead center. Most of the time I use the rule of thirds, but not always.

If we're not using the left most focus point and can competently use focusing tools to handle front and back focus issues, what's the big deal?
