The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM wouldn't retract into itself like a PowerShot lens. It stays where it was last turned to, until you turn it back or use it again to auto focus. So your lens is normal in this regard.

If you are concerned about storage, you would want to flip the switch to manual and turn it so it retracts. This lens is not full time manual focusing, so it's not designed to be manually focused in the AF mode. Thus, pushing the lens down or in on itself while in AF mode is not recommended.
