Not sure that I would believe Canon about the serial numbers affected. I purchased an S100 from Adorama in early June 2012 for my wife to use with a serial number starting with 42 which is not in range of serial numbers noted by Canon. It failed (Lens error) after 285 shots while in the middle of Norway on vacation. Returning it to Adorama upon return to NYC as it is not even useful as a brick (too small). I will say, however, the shots that were taken before it died were better than the S90 it replaced and loved the GPS feature. Fortunately, I had my 5D MII and bought a cheap Casio Exlim in a small town in Norway (Did I mention that Norway makes NYC look rather inexpensive?) Not sure if I will ask for a replacement or credit to something more reliable.
