First of all I would test the kit lens if it is good enough for you. Maybe add one of those new Heliopan high transmission polarisation filters to it which is a nice tool for landscape photography.

Years ago in my K10D times I bought the new version of the 17-70mm Sigma lens as I was not satisfied with the first version of the kit lens that came with the K10D - but the new WR version that comes with the K5 is better and if I would have had it before I bought the Sigma lens I think I would not have bought the Sigma lens.

If I want better quality than the kit zoom lens I would think of a wide angle prime lens - but not of a zoom lens with nearly same focal range as the kit lens.

Best regards
