"Macro" just means "Start the autofocus range closer to the camera than with the non-"macro" setting) and preferably focus on close objects rather than far ones. (which I think means "start from the close end" rather than "start from the far end" If you need to focus "close", use macro setting. If you want to focus "far" you'll get faster focus in the non-macro setting because the camera will attempt focus in a more limited distance range.
