The 35mm lens on a 1.5x crop DX camera will work as a 'Normal' lense, giving a similar field of view to a 50mm lens on a so-called full frame camera. This focal length is usefull for group portraits, generally usefull indoors and for street photograhpy for example. Its really a general purpose lens.

The 50mm lens on a 1.5x crop DX camera will work as a short telephoto, giving the same field of view as 75mm lens on a full frame body. Its a usefull focal length for portraits, particularly where space is limited.

They both have their uses on DX cameras, and the fast aperture yields some advantages -

  • Achieving shallow depth of field.

  • Aiding focussing in low light (manual or auto)

  • Brighter viewfinder image

  • Trade off optical performance (not best wide open) against ISO (lower is better)

John
