D800 Photos look flat

This is a very general statement and I don't have any examples in this post, but I see this in almost every posted D800 photo on this forum that are not heavily edited. I don't know how to describe it. It is almost like there is a slight film or transparency overlay to the photos even if they are in focus. I have tried to put my finger on it, but it might be the dynamic range (specifically the ability of the camera to render highlights).

Could it be the EDR or highlight protection? Does anybody see this?

I haven't tested it at all, but I don't remember this with my D700 or D200, D2X.
