Maybe it stands for "experimental", means they are not sure if it will actually work.

I think the very first time I have seen something with an X in its name was about 50 years ago, in a book about Chuck Yeager, the man who broke the sound barrier on October 14th, 1947, in the Bell X-1 .

"The X-1 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in controlled, level flight, and was the first of the so-called X-planes , an American series of experimental aircraft designated for testing of new technologies and usually kept highly secret."
