NEX 7 Panorama Mode Problem

I wish it were that simple. I tried panning with a monopod and the evf close to my eye, I tried panning with my arms extended. I tried up, down, right and left and always got "can not create panorama image; move in the direction of the arrow".

this is what I was doing. I was on the hotline with Sony tech support and they could not help me figure it out either.
