I agree the R1 image you've posted does look sharper. I don't own an a77, so I can't offer much comment on that, but I can share my similar situation in going from the R1 to an a700 a few years ago.

I did find cases where the R1 took a better picture in some of my tests. I also discovered the focus on my a700/16-80 combo wasn't spot on all of the time. Have you verified you're not getting front or back focus? Luckily, you can adjust it on the a77, but the lack of sharpness I see in that picture looks like the focus wasn't spot on. With my a850, I have found most of my lenses needed a bit of adjustment to achieve the sharpest results. Also, test it at different focal lengths, as it can vary slightly.

Another thing I had to learn when moving to the a700 was that focus point was very important. The depth of field on the R1 is a lot greater at the same aperture than it is for a DSLR. Sharpness goes down considerably for objects in front of or behind the object the camera locked focus on. For your test shots, I'm not sure what the focus point was, but the DVD cases appear to be recessed from the shelves a bit. With my a700 (and especially the a850), those wouldn't be as sharp if I focused on the bookcase.

On the positive side, once I got my a700 and a850 adjusted and learned to shoot with them (regarding focus points and aperture setting), I was getting results I could never get with the R1.
