if you were me and had $1,5000 to spend...

Currently I have a D40 with the two 'kit' lenses of 18-55 and 55-200. I'm going into medical retirement from the Army soon for back and neck issues and photography is one of the few hobbies I can still do most of the time. I'd like to upgrade my digital kit.
So with a budget of $1,500 what would you do? (shooting requirements and my ideas to follow)
I would like to shoot wildlife (from moose to birds) and document my 4 and 9 year-old boys lives. Video would be a definite bonus. Wife would like something that is easier to carry around in purse (but I guess that could be separate). Lightness would be huge (because of neck and back). I'm more of a prime kinda guy.
I've come up with the following options (but am open to others):
1. Get a good p&S for wife that does good video.
2. Get an OM-D E-M5 kit to build on
3. Get a good long lens for the D40.
4. get a D5100 and Nikkor 70-300.
TIA,
Tony
