I have scanned several decades worth of slides and after trying various flat beds and a Minolta Scan Dual IV I settled on a Nikon Coolscan V ED with Vuescan software. The only real drawback to the Minolta was the lack of infrared cleaning; many of my slides were very old and suffered from years of humidity in the tropics.
The great advantage of Vuescan is that you can scan once and then try most of the various recovery tools without needing to rescan.
Good luck, it can be most rewarding.
