Ming Thien created several interesting and helpful posts on this issue:

Here is the link to his list of recommended & not recommended lens for D800E: http://blog.mingthein.com/2012/06/30/recommended-lenses-for-the-nikon-d800e/

Some of the issue details & notes on lens performance for various lenses on the D800: http://blog.mingthein.com/2012/04/05/and-the-nikon-d800-autofocus-saga-continues-with-some-comments-on-specific-lens-performance/

Also very interesting are a couple articles on the HIFIVOICE Wordpress blog (someone in the Netherlands) (it appears to be the Nikon service centre in that country that developed the fix for this):
Before the fix:

After the Nikon Service fix done in the Netherlands:

Quoting the HIFIVOICE 2nd blog article:

Nikon Service Point in the Netherlands was the first service centre being be able to successfully repair the AF problems by re-calibrating the AF fields separately. This re-calibration repair has been invented by them by means of a special constructed hardware setup. It is now deployed by Nikon to service centers world-wide.

I suppose we will have to wait a bit to confirm if this is indeed resolved and how. (I won't be buying a D800 before then!)
