Bamboo grove, Tenriyu-ji, Kyoto

Street below Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto

Tourists pose for the obligatory group picture at Nikko, the splendid 17th c. shrine/mausoleum for the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. It is in the process of restoration. The upper storehouse (upper right) has been completed while the "twilight gate" [.. one could gaze upon it until...] awaits the restorers hand.

Detail of the gate

The more refined Karamon (Chinese gate), which lies just beyond

100% detail (more than the visitor can see)

A Dōsojin ("roadside god") in the 'loving couple' form, Kurabuchi, Gunma prefecture. These modestly portrayed deities protected village, field and travelers in rural Japan

The Gunma Museum of Modern Art, Takasaki (the decades old alliance between politicians and the construction industry has produced spacious public buildings throughout the country)

Grape vine climbs Ojiichan's shed

Obaachan's poppies
