My only comment is that for both Vimeo and Youtube use, you want H.264 (MP4) or when you upload, your video will be re-encoded by the site (takes time and degrades quality. I note that mp4 (H.264) is also compatible with the same hardware and software as WMV, but additionally is fully compatible with Apple software (not that I am a big fan of Apple software, mind you).

Vimeo makes a flat-out statement re: h.264: -- http://vimeo.com/help/compression

For Youtube, according to the forums I have read (and Wikipedia,and by inference -- Youtube itself -- see http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/static.py?hl=en&guide=1728585&topic=1728573&page=guide.cs

for their recommended settings for high quality video), Youtube streams in H.264 so will re-encode anything not uploaded in h.264.
