although I've seen Ricoh and Pentax make some good ones (especially Ricoh) adding features and what not, I don't recall a maker ever adding that much extra performance to a camera.

I doubt they have added performance, just put back what was crippled in the first place.

You have had a camera capable of this since day one but for marketing reasons Canon decided to short change you. Now the opposition have upped their game and Canon has nothing new in the near future, they decided to chip the old and open up the turbo.

If they had a replacement lined up it would never of happened, to get that increase they would of had you pitching out another $2k or more for those features.
On the face of it looks like something for nothing, but it ain't

Kevin.

Well you're a bundle of fun, when you get a nice birthday present, do you complain that you didn't get it the year before?

Wow! I wonder if Kevin even GETS birthday presents! What a repressively cynical attitude.
Questions for Kevin; Do you truly believe:

1.) Canon had all these features/ capabilities to just crush the crop-frame competition three years ago yet decided to sit on them? Were they looking out for Nikon? Waiting for Olympus to catch up? Giving Sony a breather?

2.) That during the last three years, digital processing technology has sat static and no new methods, algorithms, instruction sets have been thought of?

3.) That by releasing a thoroughly awesome feature-laden FREE update option to GREATLY improve what we thought was a great-but-forgotten product, thus breathing even MORE functionality into it....that by their having released this now, that you have been HARMED somehow?

4.) That MicroSoft owes us big time, for selling us XP instead of Windows 7 all those years ago? Same hardware, so obviously, Bill was holding out.

Incredible.
