Excellent points. And thanks for the link. That is another problem that needs highlighting. There are times when you need to use the fastest lens you can get wide open because of the light is so low that this is the only way you can get a picture you want to get, but making shallow depth of field an end in itself limits you in so many ways it makes little sense to me.

But then I am old enough to have started in photography when great depth of field was a goal. And even the "rule" of expediency for those times when you just wanted or needed to capture the scene was "f8 and be there," not "f1.2 and be there" (and with the 50mm 0.95 lens from Noktor for Micro 4/3rds we can even go to "f0.95 and be there"). The problem is when your depth of field is a few mm what you can get will be so thin (pun intended) you will capture very little of the scene, no matter how "artistic" the blur may be.

But people can do whatever they want and accept any aesthetic standards they want, as long as they do not try to impose them on everyone else
