Firmware can always be improved
In reply to KAllen, Jun 28, 2012

Anybody hear work i n embedded firmware development?

I do.
I would agree that Canon's motives are not altruistic.
I would also say that firmware is always in a state of being improved.

Like another poster noted, the speeds of the CF cards at that time may have been a decision in caping the burst rate.

Firmware is also about stability, reliability, extensibility too.

You don't always design a particular algorithm to do the fastest possible calculation.

There may be error handling requirements, timing with other software and hardware timing variations.

The original feature set & configurability were based on marketing & engineering needs & limits. Every feature you add or expand increases the test time required for releasing the code. Because of that, extra things that could have been are left out. That coupled with Canon's resistance to add features and you will always have disappointment & complaints.
