Bonus is - HG ZD lenses are substantially discounted on the used market today.

Is the 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 MkII a sharp, competent, and relatively quick performer on the E-M5? I found that, despite the good reputation of both 14-54mm lenses, my ZD 12-60mm was much better. I've read that the SWD lenses struggle with AF more so in m4/3 than the non-SWD 4/3 lenses.

They do. On m4/3, SWD lenses are slow, loud, not infrequently inaccurate, and the process is bad for the motor to boot (lots and lots of fast small adjustments).

The 14-54II is no better than the original 14-54 in terms of IQ, so definitely not up to the level of the 12-60.
