Hopefully someone breaks the code and figures out how to make the adjustment wtihout having to send in the camera.

Two things that influence the focus. First the AF sensor itself. If it's spot on, then that's that.

If it is not, it can be "nudged", so to say, to give it a bit of a "jolt", so to say, in the hopes that the focus lands where you want it to.
That's with the A77 anyway.

It's unknown whether the A57 and 65 have internally this micro-adj-feature, and then either all set to 0, or preset with a set of values.

Perhaps, and this is another speculation: perhaps it does have this feature, and at one of the last stages of manufacturing the camera, they give it some values to make it focus right.
If not done right, it would... nah, that's too far fetched.

I think the key is that the AF sensor needs to be physically adjusted, repositioned.
