You certainly have FX body lens coverage if you were to make the jump right away. Consider selling off your 17-55, 10-20, 24-120 and maybe even the D300s and pick up the D800 and 24-70. From your frequent mention to going full frame (D700) why not get the D800 and be set for many years with not having to contemplate another upgrade. Unless you are a birder, sports shooter or just like a pro level (build,af...) DX body you might appreciate an FX sensor for your type of shooting.

Last summer I almost purchased a D700 but the D800 release date became a reality so I held off, once the initial purchasing and bugs are worn out I may go FX next summer with the D800, still a few dollars for this rig. Cameras are just tools and yes some are better than others but for what I mostly shoot (everything but sports and birding) FX will be the choice and I am looking forward to working with a big mp sensor. It's the processor in me...hehe.

Which ever decisions you make, good luck!

Definitely could sell the 10-20, and the 17-55 to go FX w/ 24-70.
Might keep 24-120 as lens for the old D100 (it wouldn't fetch a lot anyway).
But I want to keep the D300s because I do birding etc (notice the 500 f/4 VR).

With much smaller pixels, is the D800 really better for high ISO low noise than D700? I hadn't really looked into this, but it does appear to be true - quite the accomplishment.

And yet the D800 has drawbacks: slow frame rate (not a big deal if I keep the D300s), more expensive somewhat, need an expensive new grip and L bracket combo, need bigger memory cards...! It is somewhat tempting but these extra costs and other issues have me concerned. Frankly if I went that way I might as well get a D4..which I would love but that is hard to justify for amatuer use.
