Neural density Filters for Waterfalls Advice

I am looking for any advice on selecting a neutral density filter that I can use for taking waterfall shots in the western New York area this summer. What would be a practical starting point in terms of "stop reduction"? Brand? Variable filter? I will be shooting in early am and late afternoon
