For your information, on the Konica-Minolta A2 with a 8 Mpx sensor, the average size of superfine JPEG is 6M, the fine3.5. In its review DPR noted that there was little difference between raw and superfine JPEG. And Sony bought the photographic division of Konica-Minolta with all patents concerning optics and cameras.

My 2cts, it would not be very difficult to implement a superfine JPEG output even if doing so will block panorama, burst...

In Sony firmware story, there were firmware updates for discontnued cameras like Alphas 900-850-700 that sold much les in numbers than the HX9. It is just a question of firm policy.

Additional problem is that unlike Canon or Panasonic, it is very difficult to hack the firmware of a Sony camera.

What would be nice for Sony, as they don't seem to release a firmware update would be to release the code of discontinued cameras so hacking would be posible.
What do you think?
