Lumix DMC-TS4 / DMC-FT4 prices cut: buyer beware?
Jun 26, 2012

A great paradox: Dpreview and others gave good ratings to 2009-2010 versions of Panasonic's rugged or tough cameras, the ones that are supposed to survive falls, freezes, hot sun, or underwater dives.

So what gives with the latest 2012 entré?

The DMV-TS4 / DMC-FT4 got some nasty buyer reviews at this site:

The Amazon buyer reviews also have an unusual quotient of bad reviews.

Are the fittings or seals of the TS4/FT4 somehow worse than those of its ancestors? Failure at shallow depths appears common. Warranty protection is dubious. After a year, one must buy and install $34 new seals (or pay the company $180 to do this) before daring to take it into the water at all.

Is the camera basically jynxed? Should it be avoided at all costs?

How about if one appears priced at $299 or roughly 30% off? No dice? Might it be worth the gamble if intended only for terrestrial use or a beach visit? Or is the image quality and distortion so bad that it's worth no more alive than dead?
