It's not just the extreme left AF point (D800)
Jun 26, 2012

It seems that many who are testing their D800 for autofocus errors are only testing the centre and extreme left AF points.

For those who find that both these AF points acquire sharp focus - hurrah!, go out and enjoy your camera.

For those who find the extreme left AF point exhibits severe back focus, consider checking all your AF points (I know, it's boring, but it can be done in 10 minutes).

Many here have said, 'who uses the extreme left AF point, anyway? - just avoid it and enjoy your camera.' Well, In my tests all 18 of the left AF points exhibit significant back focus (ranging from 20 inches to 6 inches, at a focus distance of 6ft).

Some of the 18 right AF points are quite good, but the 5 on the extreme right exhibit back focus of between 10 and 15 inches.

The central bank of 15 AF points are all good.

(Tested with the 28/1.8G at f1.8 at a distance of 6ft.)

And, yes, my D800 is on its way back to the dealer now.
