The thinking is that a pure black and white target could conceivably fall into the 'sharply contrasting brightness' prohibition (though if properly exposed it shouldn't').

A black and white target is fine. Here's a post illustrating one of Nikon's AF test set-ups.

The 'sharply contrasting brightness' refers to a target that is not evenly illuminated. That is, it's half in sunlight and half in shade. It doesn't refer to the tonality of the target.

One thing about using the Nikon target. Since it contains lines running only one way, make sure when using it for the outer points that it is oriented along the proper direction for those detectors.
