its an ad, not a teaser for a then-modern photography course. Vivitar are selling DOF but the point is 'why?' because back then everyone wanted DOF. today, not so much. ...dav

FWIW PS: to answer your question: yes, i'd stop my wide-aperture-capable lens down and get the shot. the reverse situation is not possible when aperture limited....dav

That's at best a small and rather insignificant part of the story. Would you have been able to capture the shot in the Vivitar ad any better with AF and a wide aperture?
