Wrong and Wrong. Actual battery life is not 7 hrs if you do any real work on your laptop.

There is way more than 5% of people wanting spare batteries. It's just Apple does not make them available.

This is not such a black-and-white issue.

There are two reasons to buy a spare battery. One is that your old battery died. This is much less likely with the 1000-cycle Apple laptop batteries. There is a reasonable chance you will want or need to move to a newer laptop within five years, and in that time there is a reasonable chance the battery will not have dropped below a usable time threshold. If it did, you can always have Apple replace it, especially if it is still under warranty.

The second reason is because you will be away from an outlet for more than 5-7 hours. One of the most common use cases is the long airplane flight. Sure, battery life might be on the low end if you do intensive work. But in my experience, on a plane, you often have to turn down the backlight in a dim cabin, and you definitely have to shut off all the radios. These steps tend to dramatically increase the battery life on a plane, often double what you would normally get. And that's if you aren't in a seat with power, which is increasingly likely on the long-haul flights.

What's left are other people who need a second battery just for same-day extension, and Apple has deemed that audience small enough to trade off for the solution they have chosen.
