Why is the 17-55 so much more than the 18-55?

Exactly the same reason I haven't gone FF yet. 17-55 is a sweet lens on 7D body.

It's this lens that keeps me using my 7D instead of switching to something else (going big with a 5D3 or smaller with a Fuji Xpro1 or Oly OMD). It's a fantastic lens, at the expense of being pretty large. It's a blessing and a curse for lens that's awesome for travel. What makes it awesome is also what makes it a beast.

Taking into account the law of diminishing returns... it is really that much better. But the difference is mostly in the speed (2 stops faster at the long end means a lot more and bigger glass), AF speed (USM), lower CA which makes shooting jpg almost possible, and much better corner sharpness, even at large aperture.
After moving away from the Canon dslr scene this lens is what I miss most.
