I cannot do a comparison, but I can say, for me, the 50mm Macro-Planar is THE lens for portraits along with its longer brother, the 100mm Macro-Planar. Both are f2.0, no problem with today's iso capable DSLRs and as for not being real macro, I bought them for there characteristics in portrait photography...
