I just wanted to drop in and thank Lyle again for bringing this encoding method to my attention. It turns out if you are a GIMP user, G'MIC now has a pseudogrey encoding option in it's B&W conversion, and Delaboratory does as well.

I'm pretty excited about it, as it is a really interesting way to encode more luminance data in a "grayscale" image than is currently possible by any other method (at least for 8-bit PNG and JPG).
