Is my OM-D included flash defective?

This MAY be a total newb question (fitting for my first post) and honestly I am hoping I am just high-quality camera retarded so I don't have to contact Olympus support. That is why I am coming to you fine folks since reading this forum for countless hours was the inspiration for getting out of the iPhone/P&S rat-race and investing in the OM-D to begin with.

So my issue is this: The included flash fires randomly even without me depressing the shutter button. It SEEMS to occur every time as soon as the blinking charging indicator goes off although I wouldn't stake my paycheck on that as the only times it fires. I just know it is A LOT. It happens in light or dark conditions and in most/all camera modes. I initially thought it was just during iAuto. Btw, I also received the FL-300R flash as the "free" add-on and it seems to operate as I would expect a flash to do.

Help me PLEASE!!!
