Any viable alternatives to Canon's 50mm primes?

I really don't want to spend any more than $400 on such a lens. So was wondering if other lens makers have any 50mm lenses that might be competitive to Canon's 50 1.8 or 1.4. I don't really need, nor can afford, any fatster aperture.
