I rented the 400mm 5.6 and was amazed at how sharp this lens was, especially considering the price. And even though it is without IS, I was able to get some consistently sharp photos. And that is saying a lot with me as I have the steadiness of a 4 espresso shot junkie. If you use it correctly, with a monopod, tripod or the car door window, you'd be amazed at the quality. I never found myself needing a smaller focal range. If anything I wanted it to be longer, but that is common when shooting wildlife. Hope this helps!
