It is necessary to check out the release notes for some utilities to see if your camera model has been dropped from the application and what has been added. The new lens profile tab does have an update in it that goes to the server and shows what profiles you have installed and all of those available.

I have another non-Canon app that when you click update it just asks if you want the new version without any description of changes and does an auto install. Many users lost work with that method due to an unannounced downgrade of features and compatibility loss.

A typical app of the Canon utility suite that you have to be careful with is the EOS Utilities. I stopped upgrading those quite a while ago as it stopped 50D support as I recall. Zoombrowser dropped the ability of CR2 support for looking at the embedded jpg previews.

On Canon firmware updates I do get e-mails (I have my products registered. ).
