My first two lenses for Canon DSLR were 17-40 f4L and 70-200 f4L. I still have them, like them, and use them. But, in my low-light event work, I needed more speed. I found myself shooting at f4 and 1/60 at ISO 1600, and that wasn't enough for telephoto. I thought about dumping a ton of money on some "fast" (f2.8) zooms, but decided that one extra stop still wouldn't be enough. So, I went with primes. Now I do most of my available darkness work with a 35mm f2 and a 100mm f2. At around $300-$400 each, they're much cheaper than f2.8 zooms, and faster & sharper as well.
