As entertaining as your expert opinions are, I will have to be a spoil sport and let some facts get in the way of your nice story.

The 49mm limited was released in 1997,

Do you mean the 43mm? Of course, that's (like your link mentions) "focal length; 43 mm (diagonal length of 35 mm size film", a desirable lens on FF.

the 77mm in 1999,

And subsequently discontinued.

Like your link mentions, the 77mm focal length was chosen for superstition "77 mm (lucky number among 70-80 mm)" and the "lucky number" was not enough to keep it from failing as a film lens, just like others in that focal length range (75mm f2.5 Helier, 75mm f1.5 Biotar). APS digital is what caused Pentax to dust off the discontinued 77mm in 2006 and reissue it as an APS C lens. As I said, there's nothing in physics that makes a 77mm smaller or cheaper on APS.

and the 31mm in 2001.

Still trying to confirm that. Pentax made a big thing about the 2006 announcement. I never recall seeing one before that.

Anyway, here is an article that interested readers might find significantly more educational than the opinion of internet 'experts':

And here one can find an English translation:
