Beautiful dragonfly indeed. I bought the Canon 300mm F/4L IS a couple of years back and use that attached to the Canon 1.4TC to shoot dragonflies. I find it an excellent combination used on a crop body. No cropping is necessary - it's possible to fit a medium sized dragonfly in the frame fully.

It is hard to judge from one set of shots but I'd say the results I get from the 300mm + 1.4TC are considerably sharper than these 100-400 shots - but there could be many factors at stake. Here are a few from the weekend:

It's not real macro photography but sometimes it's nice to get a full insect view rather than super magnification.
