Let’s try to sum it all up:

D90:
• 12 MP
• large viewfinder (very important for a lot of shooters)
• can AF w/ older screwdriven AF lenses
• lots of direct control options via buttons and wheels

D5100:

• 16 MP (= larger image files → less effective capacity on the memory card)
• small viewfinder (fine if you don’t know the difference)
• AF w/ AF-S (or 3rd-party equivalent) lenses only
• tilt-and-swivel display (very handy for live view shoots and/or movies)
• less direct access options
• stellar high-ISO performance (for a DX sensor at least)

D3200:
• 24 MP (= even larger image files)
• small viewfinder
• AF w/ AF-S (or 3rd-party equivalent) lenses only
• even less direct access controls

(Lists do not claim completeness or accuracy)

No doubt you can capture great images with either of the three. Heck, I still get amazing stuff out of my 6-MP D50. The D5100 and D3200 are the clear winners in the dynamic range department, and I expect the D3200 to perform slightly worse than the D5100 as far as high ISO is concerned. If build quality is an issue, then the D90 rules over its younger siblings.

I concur with some of my foreposters’ motion for a zoom option or two in addition to the 35 f/1.8; Nikon has a number of affordable lenses in that area that don’t compromise IQ too much. Though as for the short-range zoom I’d rather go for the 18-105 or a used 18-70, as I frequently find 55mm not long enough at the tele end. Higher distortion at the wide end usually isn’t that much of a problem.
