Very basic flash question
Jun 17, 2012

Can someone put my mind at rest please (or not!).

I've just bought a ring flash which works fine, but the maximum sync speed for the flash and the camera is 1/125 and for some reason I haven't worked out yet it's 1/100 in AV mode.
I'm wanting to handhold and take shots at pretty close to 1:1.
Is 1/100 or 1/125 going to be fast enough to freeze for sharp shots?

I realise there are other things coming into play here, primarily whether I can get focus at 1:1 handheld, but I've managed this previously by taking three or four shot bursts and trying to get one in focus. The subject matter is primarily plants so I can often hold them at a set distance from the lens to aid getting an accurate focus distance.
So it's purely the flash sync speed that is my concern.

I'm trying to work this out logically and presumably as long as I'm not using it as fill flash with a lot of ambient light also, the duration of the flash will be way faster than 1/100 anyway so there shouldn't be a problem. My only problem will be dark outside the range of the flash, and if I'm using the flash in bright daylight.
It's an expensive unit so if I'm going to fail on sync speed it can go back.
Thanks
